Life has begun to change drastically, and fast. Schools, fitness centers, many places of work, and even some government buildings have closed. It has become a weird world where finding toilet paper and sanitizer is like finding a unicorn. It can be scary and overwhelming. This can be especially true when trying to determine what are facts and who is credible considering how polarized our country is currently. In addition, individuals are constantly at odds, blaming others, and insisting they know the truth or how best to fix the problem. This begs the question: How do we remain civil, during a crisis, in a society that is so polarized?
LISTEN! Just because you think you are right, does not mean that you are. Listen to people who have different perspectives than you. It may even bring you comfort to hear something different, and you may learn something new. This also opens communication with others when you can respect their different views or opinions by hearing them out.
BE KIND! There is a lot of unease, uncertainty, fear, and anxiety for many people. The easiest thing you can do to make this time just a little bit easier is to treat others with compassion. Check on your friends, peers, coworkers, and family.
FOLLOW THE RULES! Take accountability and follow the guidelines that health and government officials have given us to stay safe. Be responsible by staying inside and social distancing. This can ensure the health of you and others.
BE AWARE! It is crucial during this time to be aware of where we get our news as well as keeping up on updates that come out regarding the best practices to keep yourself and others healthy. Educating yourself correctly can largely impact society as a whole. Make sure you are checking your sources and listening to both democratic and conservative platforms. Most importantly, do NOT get your news from social media. Be educated and be aware.
